I am about to purchase the Power Beyond Kit for my JD4300 in order to power a backhoe. I have been quoted a price of $190.00. Is this a reasonable price? Is the kit very hard to install? Any feedback from someone who has installed a Power Beyond Kit on a John Deere would be appreciated.

I had the JD kit installed on my 955. The price for the kit was close to what you quote. On the 55 series tractors it is necessary to install a bypass plug in the hydraulic cylinder that controls the rockshaft. This requires removal of the seat, rear sheet metal under the seat, control linkages, valve cover, etc. There were 9 pages of instruction sheets accompanying the kit. Instead of doing it myself, II felt it worth the money to have the dealer install it since it was something the service department had been doing for years. ....

Brent,The installation of the PB is very simple. Less than 30 minutes
As follows:
Remove the seat
Remove the rt. seat closeout
Remove the hyd. line between the SCV / RCV
Install the coupler bracket "where the center link hanger is currently mounted"
Install the two hyd. lines (1 to SCV) (1 to RCV) and attach to bracket
Install the the 90 plug under the rt.rockshaft arm "you'll have to remove the pipe plug first"
Install the loop line to the lower fitting on the bracket
Install closeout and seat
Make sure when the backhoe is installed to plub the return into the coupler under the rt.rockshaft arm and NOT to the RCV. The surge relief PSI in the RCV will damage the backhoe valves.

Brent, also do yourself a favor and have a 10" hydraulic line made up to put on the 90 fitting. It makes it much easier to hook and unhook that line from the tractor seat.

I think what is being talked about is the JD kit that allows an additional SCV to be spliced into the loader SCV's PB line. The set-up then flows open-centre oil through the hoe valve before returning to the sump. With my hook-up to a 3rd control valve on my loader SCA, the oil returns through the 3ph in route to the sump so the 3ph can operate while the hoe is mounted. I image the JD kit is similar. I believe the kit has a short connection hose to connect the pressure and return lines when the hoe isn't mounted. The hose has to be there when the hoe isn't mounted or nothing works. All in all, $190 for the kit sounds reasonable, since it is mostly hoses connectors and brackets but no valves. I think I've heard of people paying more.

If it's a JD hoe, everything probably is designed to go together. For example, I believe the JD kit has different fittings on the hose to ensure that the pressure and return lines to the hoe can't be connected backwards. An after-market hoe may not have the right fittings, but that would be a simple fix. If there's any confusion, most hydraulic valves are stamped to identify the ports. Input ports are usually stamped 'IN' or 'P'. As noted, connecting a hoe backwards can do major damage.

There is a terminology issue here--small thing but I'll mention it anyway. The kit does not provide power-beyond capability; it utilizes power-beyond. Power-beyond is provided by the loader SCV assembly. A valve either has it of it doesn't have it. PB valves have one input and two return ports while standard valves have one return port. The reason for PB, as mentioned, is to prevent damage to a SCV resulting from simultaneous operation of a downstream valve. The same issue potentially affects a hoe that is mounted ahead of a 3ph (potentially the 3ph could be in lift while a hoe valve is operated). I imagine that hoes are intended for this type of hookup and the valves are adequately designed. However, it might be good to make sure the hoe return line may be placed ahead of the 3ph rather than going directly to the sump.

With the 4300 CUT you'll have two Deere backhoe options: 47/48 both will require the RCV to be non-functional while the hoe is operational or the spool caps and seals will be damaged. When the backhoe is removed the loop line will need to be connected to allow the flow to continue through the RCV thus the RCV will then function.
The third SCV option is a completely different set up. All 4200-4700 CUT's with dual SCV have an extra spool in that valve so when the third SCV kit is purchased all you get is the lines and controls. If a fourth and fifth valve is installed it will require the purchase of the PB kit to supply flow to that additional valve yet in that application the RCV will be able to function.
To the best of my experience with these products all the PB does is to gain access to flow between the SCV or the blank manifold for non-SCV units and the RCV. Thus all 4000 Series "42-47" can have PB. It is required that what ever may be powered from the PB be open centered. None of the 4000 series have a PB valve.

I'll contribute what I've gleaned about power-beyond. It's a SCV that has one input and two return ports. The PB port carries the open-centre oil flow when all control valves are 'centered' (or open). The second return line (sometimes stamped 'T') goes directly to the sump and carries cylinder return oil (the oil that's displaced from the low pressure side of a cylinder that's in use). The PB line can go to the sump, to another SCV or to the 3ph.

The reason for a PB valve is to protect an SCV's exhaust galleys against high pressure if a control valve is operated at the same time a valve in a downstream SCV. The downstream valve closes the line to develop pressure, and the entire high-pressure line ahead of the valve sees the high pressure. If an upstream valve is then operated, the SCV is exposed to high pressure. The cylinder exhaust parts of all SCV's are not necessarily designed to withstand relief-valve pressures and can rupture. PB valves protect these parts by isolating them from the PB line.

Nothing other then the pressure issue prevents an SCV or 3ph from being hooked up downstream from a conventional valve. The system would work almost the same. The only difference is that with a conventional valve, cylinder exhaust oil goes into the singe outlet. A downstream valve that is operated at the same time can develop pressure to move its cylinder from the exhaust oil. In a PB system, exhaust oil goes directly to the sump, and a downstream cylinder won't move unless the cylinders are plumbed in tandem.

In my case, I run my hoe from the 3rd control valve on my loader SCV. I bungee the valve open. The flow goes from the pressure side of the control valve to the hoe input. Then, from the hoe output to the control valve return. My loader SCV is a PB type, so the hoe return oil flows directly to the sump through the low-pressure (T) line rather than the PB line. The PB line goes to the 3ph, so there would be the risk of damaging the hoe valve except for the PB feature of the loader SCV.

I know this is an old post but did you ever install the power beyond kit and if so how difficult was it?
